Week 13 Post – Question regarding Facebook and Procrastination

November 28, 2011 at 3:02 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

In these articles about Facebook and how it effects procrastination and grades of students, the main argument and question that I have is how can we accurately distinguish whether or not Facebook is actually effecting grades – there are so many other factors to take into consideration besides ones’ GPA. Do you think an experiment having users deactivate their Facebook Pages during one semester of their college career compared to the other semesters using it would be a good way to measure the effects?

  1. While this could be a good experiment that could maybe increase interest that GPA decreases when going on Facebook, I don’t think deactivating Facebook would necessarily be able to show that it is a causal relationship between the two. I think that there could still be many other factors that influence the student’s GPA that couldn’t be controlled for in a natural setting. However, this study could be an interesting start to see if there are any effects Facebook has on academic performance.
